Until he was 1.5 years old, Benben was a perfectly healthy, smart, intelligent, cheerful, mischievous little boy who walked skillfully, "spoke" in 3 languages, and happily helped his mother with everyday tasks.
One Saturday night, however, the family experienced every parent's nightmare: Benben accidentally swallowed a peanut kernel, which caused him to choke. The paramedics brought him back after 15-20 minutes, but due to the lack of oxygen, he suffered serious brain damage. As a result of the accident, Benben developed cerebral palsy, has first-degree brain atrophy in the affected brain areas, and was also diagnosed with epilepsy. The little boy spent 4 weeks at the SOTE I. Pediatric Clinic, from where he was transferred to the Rehabilitation Department of the Zala County Saint Raphael Hospital with a laryngeal cannula and a gastric tube. Here he returned from the conscious coma after 3 months, and was in bed for a total of 5 months. Given his condition, Benben is currently not potty trained, but we are trying to get him used to the potty, he is unable to change positions or speak on his own. <\/p>\n
Smiling 4-year-old Benben is a true little warrior, with a strong will, great perseverance, and a huge heart. He fights tirelessly every day to live an independent, fulfilling life, which his therapists say he has a chance for.<\/p>\n
The little boy was able to get rid of the laryngeal tube after 11 months, despite long complications, and since then he has been happy to hear his voice, sometimes even saying meaningful words. His parents are impatiently waiting for Benben's attention to develop sufficiently to start speaking.
Unfortunately, due to his injury and trauma, he hasn't been able to say goodbye to the gastric tube yet, but Benjamin enjoys tasting, likes flavors, and accepts small amounts of food by mouth. The family can't wait for the little guy to happily snack again.
Benben has improved a lot since the accident: his mind is intact, his attention and focus are getting better, with a little help he can sit cross-legged, stand up from a squat and sit down again, and he can do it by walking a few meters. He really likes to \u201cescape\u201d from the couch, which he especially enjoys because he developed the movement himself and consciously controls it. He loves to play hide-and-seek: finding a toy hidden behind a scarf. He loves music, swimming, nursery rhymes, and being the center of attention.
Due to his serious injury, Benben is receiving complex therapy: a special education teacher, physiotherapists, AAK therapist, conductor, eating therapist and hydrotherapist are helping him recover, and every two months \u2013 depending on our financial circumstances \u2013 we try to take him for a week of intensive therapeutic development, which, as a kind of shock therapy, usually results in a huge leap in his development. The many developments are essential for Benben's development, but at the same time they put a tremendous strain on the livelihood of a single-income family.<\/p>\n
Benben and the family's dream is for the little boy to be able to walk, talk, and live an independent life again.<\/p>\n
