The first obstacle arose whilst he was still in hospital: Levi was unable to eat, and it was on the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) of another hospital that he learnt to swallow. As time went on, it became increasingly clear that his motor development was lagging behind. They went from doctor to doctor and underwent countless tests before the diagnosis was finally made: a rare genetic condition, 2p21 deletion syndrome. Levi is currently five and a half years old and has been attending ongoing therapy sessions since he was three months old. They have to pay for a significant proportion of these privately, as many of the necessary therapies are not subsidised. Now a new ray of hope has emerged for them: a treatment in Mexico which has produced encouraging results for several children in similar situations. At Levi’s age – up to around 8 years old – there is the greatest chance that this therapy will be effective, and it is also possible that several sessions will be needed to achieve lasting results. We would like to give him this chance. A chance at an easier, fuller life.
