K. Kolos and his family

K. Kolos is an 8-and-a-half-year-old, cheerful, lively little boy from Nyíregyháza, whose condition was discovered during a routine blood test in 2018. His laboratory results and further genetic tests confirmed that Kolos suffers from Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a rare, genetically caused muscle disorder. There is currently no definitive cure for this condition.

Kolos’s condition is being continuously monitored by his doctors in both Hungary and Italy. Since the summer of 2021, he has had to take steroids to slow down the process of muscle wasting. To date, he has undergone three stem cell treatments abroad. The stem cell treatment needs to be repeated every 4–5 months, at an annual cost of approximately 10 million forints.

Despite his illness, Kolos is a cheerful, curious little boy who loves riding his balance bike, going on outings and taking part in group activities. He loves spending time with his family, laughing and discovering new things. It is these shared experiences that give him – and his parents – the most strength.

However, everyday life presents ever-increasing challenges. His mobility is already limited, which is why regular rehabilitation is of the utmost importance. The illness has completely transformed their lives, not only emotionally but also financially. Their greatest dream is not for miracles to happen, but for Kolos to remain an independent, smiling and happy little boy for as long as possible.
