Zoárd is a seven-year-old boy with Down’s syndrome; he has three siblings and is the second child. Zoárd’s extra chromosome came as a surprise to the family. Seven years have passed since then; he has been attending various developmental programmes since he was two weeks old, and now that he has started school, they have also begun speech and language therapy, with extra sessions alongside his school timetable. Zoárd is a cheerful, music-loving, sporty boy who loves to talk and would very much like to speak clearly and coherently. Perhaps the most important thing for them is that others understand what he is saying – so that life in this society will be easier for him in the future. However, this additional therapy places a very heavy financial burden on the family.
