Peti has recently been diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. This is a serious, rare disease that causes gradual muscle weakness, followed by muscle atrophy, eventually leading to complete muscle breakdown. A special gene therapy could be available abroad that could stop this process, but it would cost around 1.3 billion forints.

Since his diagnosis, the family has done everything they can to improve Peti's condition. They have tried every available therapy, treatment and medication. Peti has been taking steroids since he was four years old, which, although they slow the progression of the disease, they cannot stop it - and can have serious side effects.

There is another medicine that has no side effects, but it costs between HUF 2.5 and 3 million a month. For the family, this amount is already prohibitive.

Peti is currently at school, but he is already showing signs of muscle atrophy. His hands tire quickly when he writes, his legs ache after prolonged exercise and he also has attention problems. The family - parents, grandparents, relatives - are fighting for Peti, but their financial means are limited. 

Foreign gene therapy would be the only chance to stop Peti's muscle condition from deteriorating further. Although it cannot bring back the muscle mass already lost, it would stop the deterioration. It would be the only way for him to survive and lead a normal life, given the circumstances.

Relying on the support of well-meaning people and companies, the family set up a foundation for Peti's recovery. They are already proud of their little boy, but they want to feel that feeling for many years to come. They want Peti to be able to say „Daddy” as an adult, to cuddle up with his mother and brother, to play with his grandparents, whom he loves very much.

For them, „hope is the last to die” has become not just a cliché, but the most important motto of their lives. They know that the cost of treatment is enormous and that the world is getting harder, but they believe that with a little help, Peti's life can still be saved.
